Gemstone are characterized in terms of refractive index, luster, specific gravity, dispersion hardness, shapes, cuts, color, UV-florescence, cleavage and fracture etc. They may exhibit double or singlle refraction. Gems may have luminescence and a distinctive absorption spectrum. The presence of Minor flaws or Material within a stone may be as inclusions.
